Dr. Steven R. Goldstein is a leading Gynecologist in Manhattan, New York. In private practice for over 25 years, Dr. Goldstein sometimes encounters patients with urinary tract infections (UTI). The medical establishment today prescribes antibiotics for these urinary tract infections. In patients who believe they have a urinary tract infection, the dangers of overuse of antibiotics are present. All too often many physicians and many urgent care centers will simply dipstick a patient’s urine and if positive for a substance called leukocyte esterase they will initiate an antibiotic that is broad-spectrum enough to kill virtually any organism in the urine. In the last year I have seen two examples of something that I predicted would occur for more than a decade now. I have had two patients in whom we performed a urine culture that came back with bacteria that were resistant to virtually every oral antibiotic that we normally use. I unfortunately had to call those patients and inform them that I treat urinary tract infection almost as a “courtesy” and that I was not going to start an intravenous line or give them an intramuscular shot of some new antibiotic that I had virtually no experience with. They would have to go to a urologist or their regular doctor for treatment of their urinary tract infection. The way I prefer to treat presumed urinary tract infections is by starting a patient on a medication to take the discomfort (burning, urgency, frequency, sometimes even blood) away while a culture is being obtained. If the culture shows bacteria in the urine I would choose the least broad-spectrum antibiotic for that particular bacteria. If the culture shows no true infection then such urinary tract inflammation can be successfully treated with one week of the urinary anesthetic (the drug that turns your urine in a dark orange color). Doctor Steven R. Goldstein MD is Best Obgyn in NYC for perimenopause. He is also the co-author of the book “The Estrogen Alternative”. With over 25 years of experience as a top Gynecologist, Doctor Goldstein has successfully treated menopausal women or women suffering from perimenopause or other conditions arising from a lack of female hormones. When women’s bodies stop producing Estrogen and Progesterone naturally (due to age, menopause or other factors) there are symptoms that arise such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, foggy memory, mood swings, night sweats, vaginal dryness, free floating anxiety and more. Of these, vaginal dryness and hot flashes are the two main symptoms of a lack of Estrogen. However, the lack of Estrogen also affects the brain as there are many sites in the brain where estrogen receptors are found. This may explain foggy memory, and other symptoms just prior to menopause. Skin, blood vessels and breasts also depend on Estrogen to stay toned and flexible. So you see the lack of estrogen doesn’t only produce hot flashes and vaginal dryness, but it has an overall effect on a woman’s health including the cardiovascular system, bone, cognitive abilities and more. Consider that many menopausal women suffer bone loss due to a lack of estrogen, in fact there are approximately one million osteoporotic fractures among women in the US each year. So the effects of a lack of estrogen on a woman’s body are many. Dr. Steven R. Goldstein is the Best Obgyn in NYC for menopause and perimenopause. He is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University School of Medicine and a Past Chairman of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, New York Section and Honorary Fellow, Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. |
